MICHIGAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Chamber Supports Governor Whitmer’s Reappointment of Tax Tribunal Judge

Michigan Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Sept. 24.

Governor Whitmer made the right choice in reappointing Judge Victoria Enyart to the Michigan Tax Tribunal and the Michigan Chamber publicly supported the reappointment this week at a Senate Advice and Consent Hearing.

A very vocal few, Including Senator Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan), tried to discredit Judge Enyart for a recent property tax ruling she issued on remand from the Supreme Court regarding the valuation of a large retail store. In one instance, a group of County Commissioners from the Upper Peninsula submitted a resolution they passed falsely stating the Judge Enyart “is not competent”, has no “training or background” to render decisions in the Tribunal and “is among the most frequently reversed (overruled in higher courts) members ever to be appointed”.

The truth is Ms. Enyart is one of the most competent judges to ever sit on the Tribunal. She is a Certified General Appraiser and a level IV Master Assessing Officer who has over 25 years’ experience working in real and personal property assessment administration. Judge Enyart has served as President of Michigan Assessors Association, was named the 2001 Most Valuable Member for the Michigan Assessor’s Association, was named the 2013 Member of the Year for the National Association of Property Tax Judges and has served as an instructor for Michigan Assessors Association and International Association of Assessing Officers.

Judge Enyart has issued approximately 150 rulings which have been upheld 95% of the time. She has been appointed by 4 Governors, 2 Republican and 2 Democrat, serving over 13 years on the Tribunal.

The Chamber submitted a public letter of support reiterating that the State is lucky to have the experience and breadth of knowledge Judge Enyart brings to the Tax Tribunal. It is appalling that a vocal, yet extremely select few, are trying to discredit Judge Enyart’s long and successful career that know comparably nothing about property tax administration and valuation or have a vested financial interest in reshaping the property tax system for personal gain.
