City of Jackson issued the following announcement on Sep. 24.
Over the last several weeks there has been reported cases of the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) across Southwest Michigan. Many of you have heard reports in the media, including a recent statement from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Eastern Equine Encephalitis is a serious, mosquito-borne virus that can have serious health consequences, including death.
Jackson County has been placed on the county watch list which is updated by MDHHS. The Jackson County Health Department has released a list of suggestions for community members to help protect themselves. Jackson County Health Department suggestions: 1. Use EPA-registered insect repellents that include DEET or another EPA-approved product. 2. Wear socks with shoes, light colored long pants, and long sleeved shirts. 3. Dump all standing water around homes and buildings. 4. Ensure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens with tears or gaps. 5. Use nets and/or fans over outdoor eating areas. 6. Use bed nets for those sleeping outdoors or in conditions with no window screens. 7. Avoid trips to heavily-wooded or swampy areas.
The City of Jackson Parks, Recreation and Cemeteries Department will have recreational activities continue at this current time as normal. The safety of our participants is very important to us and will keep you updated in case of any significant changes.
