Rep. Bronna Kahle (R-Adrian) is encouraging Lenawee County fourth-graders to think about the legislative process and how it affects state residents with the “There Ought To Be A Law” contest she is sponsoring.
The competition asks fourth-grade students from across the county to work with classmates on creating a recommendation for a state law, then submit it, according to the Michigan House Republicans website. Contest submissions will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 30, after which judging of the ideas will commence.
“Students should approach this just like a legislator would,” Kahle said, according to Michigan House Republicans. “Once their class has identified a proposed solution to a problem -- their idea for a new state law -- then they should think it through. Why is it a good idea? How would it help people? Who would support the idea? Who would oppose it? Getting involved will help our fourth-grade students across Lenawee make an impact on their community and inspire others to do the same.”
The winning idea will be announced in November. The idea will then be drafted into legislation to be submitted before the Michigan House of Representatives. Depending on the current COVID-19 safety level, the winning class may be permitted to come to the Capitol to advocate for their proposal.
“This contest will be a wonderful way to get students involved and help them learn about state government,” Kahle told Michigan House Republicans. “It also provides them with a great opportunity to think about how they can make a positive difference in the lives of their families, friends and neighbors.”
Any Lenawee County students with ideas for new Michigan state laws can submit them to Kahle through her legislative email at BronnaKahle@house.mi.gov.
