Leaf collection woes surrounding a mandate for Hillsdale residents to bag their leaves brought emotions to the surface at a recent meeting of the Hillsdale City Council.
Las year, the City Council had chosen to privatize its leaf collection services with the expectation that it would save money, according to coverage by the Hillsdale Daily News. The annual contract with Modern Waste Systems is worth $20,000.
But as part of the new service, residents were also required to bag their leaves in biodegradable bags, which many objected to, citing concerns that elderly and disabled residents would struggle to comply, according to the Hillsdale Daily News. And many residents did not comply, which resulted in the leaves winding up in roadways and storm drains.
In January, the city discussed purchasing a $200,000 leaf vac system. This year’s collection is scheduled from Saturday, Nov. 7 through Saturday, Dec. 5, and residents at this time are still required to bag their leaves.
