We Salute the Fenton Independent

Today we salute the Fenton Independent, without which we would not have this Facebook page. The Independent is simply a towering achievement of life and history in Fenton that ran from 1868 until 2002.

H.N. Jennings set forth the vision for his paper in his first editorial, May 26, 1868:

"It is the intention of the publishers to make the Independent a newspaper which would do credit to the community and fairly represent the interests of a fast growing town.

"We shall not advocate any party or creed but hold our editorial columns open to a free and fair discussion of matters which may be of interest to our readers claiming the right to advocate whatever may be deemed for the best interest of the community.

"But this cannot be accomplished without the support of all interested in the prosperity of our beautiful village. To such, we shall look for support and encouragement and expect your hearty cooperation of this enterprise."
