Sen. Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) welcomed some unlikely guests to the Capitol when his granddaughter’s class took a trip to visit his Senate office in early March. The students from Jackson Christian Elementary, which included the senator’s grandchild, were treated to a tour and met some interesting people along the way.
Posting on his Facebook page, Shirkey said he was proud to host his guests and took several photos with them. The move comes amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has put the country’s economy and learning facilities on hold.
In another Facebook post, Sen. Shirkey warned people about phone scammers who are taking advantage of a desperate situation by impersonating Jackson County Health Department and Clinics.
In the post, he mentioned how people are scammed by impersonators pretending to be from the Department of Immunization or Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
The scammers often claim to have their victims’ Social Security number and are calling "only to verify" the information. Sen. Shirkey encouraged exercising caution and reporting anyone who is using this method for illegal activities.
