Washington, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) pressed Columbia President Minouche Shafik about Professor Joseph Massad's controversial statements regarding the October 7 terrorist attack. Massad's remarks, where he described the slaughter of nearly 1200 Jews in positive terms, have sparked outrage.
This is not the first time Professor Massad has been involved in such controversies. In 2005, an investigation by Columbia corroborated allegations that Massad had told a Jewish student to "get out of my classroom" after questioning his views.
During the exchange, President Shafik indicated that Massad had been removed as Chair of the School of Arts & Sciences’ Academic Review Committee. However, the validity of this claim was later questioned by Rep. Stefanik, as Columbia's website still lists Massad as the Chair.
The incident has raised concerns about the handling of antisemitism within academic circles, with Congressman Walberg highlighting the need for accountability. The full exchange between Congressman Walberg and President Shafik can be viewed online.
