State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz of Jackson has introduced a new plan aimed at providing support to Michigan seniors looking to age comfortably and safely in their own homes. The plan, outlined in House Bill 5632, offers a tax credit for seniors aged 65 and over who make essential modifications to their residences to better suit their evolving needs.

"Every senior deserves the opportunity to age gracefully in the comfort of their own home,” said Schmaltz. “My plan provides much-needed financial relief to Michigan seniors and their families, enabling them to make essential modifications that enhance safety and accessibility.”

The proposed tax credit, which can go up to $250, will cover expenses related to renovations like installing ramps, bath bars, widening doors, wheelchair lifts, and stair lifts. It aims to ensure that Michigan seniors have the necessary resources to maintain their independence and dignity as they age. Additionally, the bill also extends the tax credit to family members who incur expenses while making modifications to a senior’s home, recognizing the vital support provided by family caregivers.

“Many seniors want to age in place, but the financial strain of making the necessary home improvements can be daunting,” Schmaltz emphasized. “My goal is to ease this burden by providing a tax credit that incentivizes and supports seniors and their families in creating safe and accessible homes that meet their needs.”

House Bill 5632 has been referred to the House Tax Policy Committee for further consideration.
