State Rep. Sarah Lightner’s plan to safeguard funding for trial courts throughout Michigan has been signed into law. Lightner, a Republican from Springport, sponsored House Bill 5392 to address the imminent funding issue faced by local courts in the state.

"The Supreme Court ruled that the current trial court funding system is broken, and a new system is in the works, but we’re just not there yet," said Lightner.

The bill allows courts to continue imposing costs on criminal defendants through December 2026, ensuring that the courts can maintain their operations while a more permanent solution is developed by the Legislature.

House Bill 5392 received bipartisan support in both the House and Senate before being signed into law by the governor. It is now known as Public Act 38 of 2024.
