A Michigan state representative is trying to do her part to prevent human trafficking.
“Human trafficking is hiding in plain sight, and we must continue working together to end this evil scourge,” Bronna Kahle (R-Adrian) wrote in a letter published on the Michigan House Republicans website.
According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, there were 172 cases reported in Michigan in 2019. Nationwide, 4,585 cases were reported, with 23,784 contacts, also stated by National Human Trafficking Hotline.
Kahle said she is concerned about human trafficking, which also impacts Michigan community members. “Many people do not realize human trafficking is happening right here in our state and in our own communities where we live, work and raise our families,” she said in her letter.
The Michigan legislator attended the White House Summit on Human Trafficking in January. An executive order was signed expanding trafficking prevention programs and to help survivors.
“I feel drawn to doing what I can to help the women and children enslaved in this dark trafficking industry,” she wrote. “I’m inspired to drive forward with even greater energy and a commitment to protect victims, prosecute perpetrators and prevent the spread of this heinous crime.”
