A grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund will help the city of Adrian renovate the vacant upper floors of two historic downtown buildings and turn them into four new residential apartments.

The state awarded Adrian $242,790 in Community Development Block Grant funds. Three of the four new apartments will be reserved for households with low to moderate incomes, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) said. The buildings are at 150 and 109 N. Main Street.

“These funds will help Adrian continue its downtown revitalization efforts, which is great news for local families and the entire area,” Sen. Dale Zorn (R-Ida) told MiSenateGOP. “Our downtown areas are the heartbeat of our communities, and I applaud the local leaders for working together with state officials and private developers to make this project a reality. By rehabilitating these historic buildings, we can help attract more economic activity and people to downtown Adrian.”

Funds from the grant will pay for the construction needed to convert the vacant space into residential use. Private investment of $219,053 is expected to be generated by the project, MiSenateGOP reported.

Permits and fees will be expedited or waived by the city to support downtown rehabilitation.

“Today’s MSF approvals demonstrate our continued focus on laying a path for economic growth and recovery in Michigan while continuing to support the community projects that will secure the long-term economic health of our state,” MEDC Senior Vice President of Community Development Michele Wildman said, according to the MEDC website. “We are pleased to work with our local partners on these projects, which will help make Michigan an even more attractive place to live, work and play.”

Six other communities received support from the Michigan Strategic Fund, including Allegan, Calumet, Hastings, Iron Mountain, Kalamazoo and Mason. Private investment valued at $5.73 million is projected to result from the seven projects, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation reported.
