Classes resumed at Central Michigan University in mid-August, which means students have been out and about on campus and the surrounding town day and night.

At the same time the students returned to campus, COVID-19 cases also spiked in the Mount Pleasant area.

The same week classes began, Central Michigan officials laid down the gauntlet, threatening to suspend or fine students who attend parties during the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Click on Detroit website.

School officials sent correspondence to students explaining this. “The actions of a few selfish students have ruined an entire year for thousands of their peers,” the letter said.

The school requires all faculty, staff and students to self-screen each day for symptoms of COVID-19 before coming to the main campus or any of the branch campuses.

In the first week of classes, the school reported nearly 40 confirmed cases. As of September 11, the schools is now reporting 281 cases, according to 9&10 News.
