State Representative Kathy Schmaltz has called for action to address systemic problems within Michigan's child welfare system after two couples from the Lansing area were charged with abusing dozens of children in their care through the state's foster system. Rep. Schmaltz emphasized the need to find solutions that protect children and fix the failures within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
Schmaltz highlighted the failures of the state in detecting and preventing abusive situations, even after abuse had been reported. She explained that the recent abuse cases shed light on the systemic failures within the DHHS and underscored the urgency to address these issues. It was revealed that one of the individuals involved in the abuse cases was a former DHHS employee, which further emphasized the need for reform.
However, Rep. Schmaltz criticized lawmakers who are using these horrific circumstances to propose policies that would require all homeschool students to register with the state. She argued that targeting homeschool families is unfair and misplaced in this context. According to Schmaltz, "Moms and dads who homeschool their children are not the problem." She stressed that parents have the right to choose their children's education without government oversight.
Furthermore, Schmaltz highlighted the importance of foster families in providing care for children in need. She urged against blaming these families and parents who are doing the right things for their kids. Instead, she called for a focus on finding real solutions to address the recurring problems within the state's child welfare system.
"The vulnerable children within our system are relying on us to keep them safe and provide the care they deserve," said Rep. Schmaltz.
It is evident that there is a pressing need to address the systemic failures within Michigan's child welfare system. Rep. Schmaltz's call for action emphasizes the importance of finding solutions that protect children and fix the problems within the DHHS. Targeting homeschool and foster families is not the answer. The focus should be on ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable children within the state's care.
