State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz announced today that two local non-profits in the Jackson area have been awarded substantial grants totaling $2.5 million. The grants were allocated through the Community Center Grant Program, which is administered by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

Jackson Interfaith Shelter and Residents in Action, Inc. are the recipients of these grants, with Jackson Interfaith Shelter set to receive $2 million and Residents in Action receiving $500,000. Rep. Schmaltz, who represents Jackson and is a member of the Republican party, expressed her satisfaction with the allocation of funds, stating, “The generous grants awarded to Jackson Interfaith Shelter and Residents in Action represent a significant investment in our community’s well-being.”

Furthermore, Rep. Schmaltz highlighted the impact these grants will have on addressing important societal issues, saying, “With $2.5 million dedicated to supporting vital organizations and their efforts to address homelessness and uplift vulnerable people, these grants will drive positive change.”

The Community Center Grant Program, through which these funds were made available, was established using federal dollars provided by the American Rescue Plan. This initiative aims to support local organizations and initiatives that work towards improving the lives of vulnerable populations and addressing pressing community needs.
