State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz is leading the effort to establish a skilled trades apprenticeship program tailored for Michigan Army National Guard and Air National Guard service members. The legislation, House Bill 5703, aims to recognize the training and experience gained during service in the National Guard by counting it towards certain apprenticeship certifications.

Schmaltz emphasized the importance of the program, stating, “By integrating military experience with civilian apprenticeships, our plan paves the way for career growth and recognition of their skills.” She further highlighted Michigan's support for service members, ensuring they have the necessary tools to succeed during and after their time in the National Guard.

The proposed program would be cost-free for service members, allowing them to pursue professional development without financial burden. On-the-job learning will be incorporated into duty hours under the supervision of the service member’s supervisor.

The initiative has been referred to the House Military, Veterans, and Homeland Security Committee for further consideration.
