Rep. Fink participated in the unveiling of the Marine Sergeant Michael P. Hodshire Memorial Highway sign on a segment of M-49 located between W. Montgomery Road and Austin Road in Camden Township, Hillsdale County.
Sergeant Michael Hodshire, who hailed from Hillsdale County, served as a member of the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. He died on October 30, 2005, from injuries caused by indirect gunfire near Fallujah, Iraq while participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom. At his death, he was 25 years old and left behind two children, parents, one brother, three sisters, and grandparents.
In 2021, Rep. Fink introduced legislation to dedicate this highway to honor the local hero. It marked his first bill that became law.
“This sign is an important reminder of Sergeant Hodshire’s sacrifice and that of his family and friends,” Fink stated. “As a marine veteran I am especially humbled to play a small role in ensuring his life and heroism is not forgotten here in Hillsdale County.”
Naming highways and bridges serves as a way to commemorate individuals or events significant to Michigan or its communities. The Michigan Memorial Highway Act provides the framework for such dedications within the state.
