Legislation sponsored by State Representative William Bruck aimed at improving traffic flow and safety on Michigan roadways has advanced in the state House. House Bill 4522, which received bipartisan support, seeks to reduce congestion by requiring large trucks and tractor-trailers to avoid the left lane when traveling on expressways with three or more lanes.
Current law instructs trucks to stay to the right except when passing, but Bruck’s bill would provide law enforcement with clearer authority to enforce these rules. The proposed measure is intended to create more predictable driving patterns and enhance safety for all drivers.
“This is a common-sense bill that is all about safety,” Bruck said. “With clarity in law and more practical, predictable driving patterns, we can improve traffic flow and reduce the number of truck and vehicle accidents that we see on our roadways. I’m very appreciative of the support that’s been behind this legislation, and that was reflected in this vote. Unfortunately, this same plan did not reach the governor’s desk to be signed into law last term. I am hopeful that we can come together this time to prioritize public safety.”
The legislation includes exceptions allowing trucks to use the left lane under certain circumstances—such as preparing for a left turn, when hazards make another lane safer, or where construction signage permits it. In construction zones where only two lanes are open, trucks would be required to use the rightmost lane.
Having passed in the House with strong support from both parties, HB 4522 will now move forward for consideration in the Senate.
