As education becomes an increasingly difficult proposition in the era of COVID-19, Michigan GOP leaders are recognizing the extraordinary efforts that have taken place by educators and support staff around the state while dealing with a less-than-ideal situation.

Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake) has been particularly outspoken in recognizing the work put forth by education professionals this year. “Michigan teachers could not have performed so exceptionally well in these trying times of pandemic if it weren’t for the outstanding work of their support staff. Dawn Hendges consistently demonstrates selfless service to her community, and this award is well-deserved,” Shirkey said, according to MiSenateGOP.

Dawn Hendges is one of the recipients of the two awards that are presented to Michigan's education support staff. Hendges is a food and nutrition service worker in Western School District, located in Jackson County, and she has been with the district for over 20 years. The district leaders praised Hendges, citing her ability to connect with students and go above and beyond to ensure that students receive the meals and nutrition that they need to perform their best at school, especially in a time that can be stressful for students.

Holly Holm was the other recipient of the award. She is an administrative assistant in Crawford-Oscoda-Ogemaw-Roscommon Intermediate School District, who has been recognized for her efforts during this year. Both women are now eligible for national recognition, which is overseen by the U.S. Department of Education.

“The Rise Award is a new, national award created to honor school support staff. I would not be at all surprised if these two talented women win this award as well. They are certainly deserving," Shirkey told MiSenateGOP.
