City of Hillsdale issued the following announcement on Oct 6.

The City of Hillsdale's Department of Public Services will once again collect leaves, grass clippings and garden debris throughout the city this fall. However, there are significant changes to the collection process this year due to new equipment being used. Please read this page carefully to make sure you understand the new guidelines and the scheduled collection dates for your neighborhood.

DPS will be doing two rounds of leaf collection, with the first round beginning Monday, Oct. 25, and the second round starting Tuesday, Nov. 16. For collection purposes, the City has been divided into four sectors, based on current ward boundaries, and each ward has been assigned a specific collection period. DPS will collect leaves one ward at a time, in the following order: Ward 1, Ward 4, Ward 3 and Ward 2.

Check below for your ward's scheduled collection dates. If you do not know which ward you live in, please consult the Ward Map.

WARD 1

Round 1: MON. 10/25, TUE. 10/26, WED. 10/27

Round 2: TUE. 11/16, WED. 11/17, WED. 11/18

WARD 4:

Round 2: MON. 11/29, TUE. 11/30, WED. 12/1, THU. 12/2

WARD 2

Round 1: TUE. 11/9, WED. 11/10, FRI. 11/12

Round 2: FRI. 12/3, MON. 12/6, TUE. 12/7

Please make sure your leaves are placed out near the curb, but NOT in the street, prior to the first day of your scheduled collection period. DPS crews will make one sweep through the City during each of the two rounds of collection. They will not be able to return to your street or residence to pick up leaves that were not placed out near the curb prior to the first day of your scheduled collection periods.

In order for the new equipment to function properly, leaf piles must be kept as clean as possible. Piles CANNOT contain:

  • Brush/limbs/sticks
  • Trash
  • Construction materials
  • Bricks/blocks/rocks
  • Plastic/biodegradeable paper bags*
*Biodegradeable bags are still accepted at the Hillsdale Transfer Station, located at 425 E. Carleton Rd., but cannot be collected by our new equipment.

When placing leaves for pickup, please adhere to the following rules:

  • DO NOT piles leaves within two feet (2') of any fixed objects, including but not limited to trees, hydrants, utility poles, signs and water valves.
  • DO NOT place leaves out sooner than one week before your scheduled collection dates.
  • REMOVE all basketball hoops or other objects from the terrace or street right-of-way.
  • NO PARKING on the street during your designated collection days. This is so our collection equipment can access leaf piles placed out at the curb.
IMPORTANT NOTE: DPS will not be responsible for damage to any decorations or unapproved plantings in the terrace. Each property owner will be responsible for the immediate removal of any/all material raked or placed in the terrace before and/or after the collection period.

If you have any questions regarding fall leaf collection, please contact DPS by calling (517) 437-6490.
