State Rep. Andrew Fink | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Andrew Fink has introduced a legislative proposal aimed at prohibiting local government ordinances that could increase costs for landlords, potentially making housing less affordable in Michigan.
The proposed bill specifically seeks to prevent municipalities from enacting or enforcing ordinances that restrict landlords in several ways. These include preventing landlords from obtaining information about a prospective tenant's financial or criminal history, prohibiting them from entering into rental agreements while another tenant resides on the property, and barring them from showing properties to prospective tenants under similar circumstances.
Fink expressed concerns about the impact of such ordinances, stating, "Ordinances like these are driving up the cost of rental properties, making Michigan a less affordable place to live and raise a family." He further emphasized safety concerns by adding, "And preventing landlords from screening tenants based on criminal history is unsafe for neighboring residents in multi-family dwellings. Our state law should protect the property rights and safety of Michigan residents."
The bill, known as House Bill 5564, has been referred to the Committee on Economic Development and Small Business for further consideration.
