Today, leaders of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, including Congressmen Tim Walberg (R-MI), Donald Norcross (D-NJ), Troy Balderson (R-OH), and Derrick Van Orden (R-WI), have introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Gary Peters (D-MI) presented a similar resolution in the Senate.
Rep. Walberg highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, "Across the country, and in Michigan, we have a passionate riding community, which I am proudly a member of." He noted that spring brings more riders onto the roads and emphasized that "in 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 6,335 motorcycle fatalities," underscoring the need for increased awareness and safety measures.
Rep. Norcross expressed his appreciation for motorcycling by saying, "Riding motorcycles is one of the simple pleasures in life," and stressed that everyone should have the opportunity to ride safely. He believes that recognizing May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month will enhance rider safety and education.
Rep. Balderson shared his enthusiasm for motorcycling as one of Congress's few motorcyclists: “Whether on pavement or off-road, riding has long been a passion of mine.” He urged all motorists to share the road responsibly.
Rep. Van Orden remarked on the freedom associated with motorcycles while acknowledging their risks: “Motorcycles are about freedom... but I also know that too many lives are lost each year in preventable accidents.”
Sen. Ernst reflected on her personal experiences with motorcycles from childhood through adulthood: “From delivering messages as a young girl to my dad while he was working out in the fields to riding through... Northeast Iowa with family and friends,” she cherishes these memories while promoting safety during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
Sen. Peters added his perspective on enjoying Michigan’s beauty via motorcycle: “I firmly believe there is no better way to see the beauty of our state than on a motorcycle,” stressing the importance of safe roadways for both riders and drivers.
Congressman Walberg continues his role as co-chair of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus. Further information about his congressional work can be found at walberg.house.gov.
