President Trump has signed a memorandum directing his administration to take measures to protect the Great Lakes from invasive carp. The directive expresses support for the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, which aims to prevent these fish from migrating from the Mississippi River basin into Michigan. This project is a collaborative effort between the federal government and the states of Illinois and Michigan.
Congressman Tim Walberg of Michigan's 5th district expressed approval of President Trump's actions. "I applaud President Trump and his Administration for their strong leadership and unwavering commitment to prioritizing the needs of Michiganders," said Rep. Walberg. He highlighted the importance of the Great Lakes, describing them as "a national treasure" that supports recreational activities and a significant fishing industry. Walberg believes that advancing this project aligns with preserving both the ecosystem and economic interests of the region.
Earlier in February, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker had paused progress on the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, which was perceived as a setback in efforts to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. In response, Congressman Walberg joined forces with fellow Michigan Congressmen Jack Bergman, John Moolenaar, and John James to urge Governor Pritzker to reconsider his decision.
Walberg has consistently supported initiatives aimed at protecting the Great Lakes. He visited the Brandon Road Lock and Dam in 2019 to evaluate potential protective measures against Asian carp firsthand. Additionally, he backed legislation encouraging the Army Corps of Engineers to expedite their study necessary for guiding this project.
Congressman Walberg is part of the House Committee on Natural Resources. More details about his congressional work can be found on his official website.
