Senator Roger Victory has cast his vote in favor of several budget amendments aimed at bolstering school choice and ensuring protections for students attending nonpublic schools. The Michigan senator, representing Hudsonville, expressed concerns about the current budget proposals passed by Senate Democrats.
"The proposed budgets that Senate Democrats passed fail to support all students equally," stated Victory. He emphasized his commitment to collaborating with fellow Republicans to advocate for educational funding policies where "the money follows the student."
The amendments supported by Victory were intended to address perceived discrimination against nonpublic schools within the School Aid and Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) budgets. These amendments included provisions to eliminate what Victory describes as unfair treatment of nonpublic schools.
Specifically, an amendment to Senate Bill 164 related to the MiLEAP budget sought to enable nonpublic schools to offer dual enrollment opportunities for their students. However, these proposed changes did not pass, as they were rejected along party lines with all Senate Democrats voting against them.
