State Representative Kathy Schmaltz has spearheaded a resolution to declare May 11 to 17, 2025, as Police Week in Michigan. This move pays tribute to the dedication and service of law enforcement officers across the state.
"Every time a police officer puts on their uniform, they face the unknown to keep us safe," said Schmaltz, R-Jackson. "This resolution expresses the deep appreciation we feel for their courage, integrity, and willingness to serve, even in the most dangerous situations."
The resolution aligns with the national observance of Police Week, which was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. It honors fallen officers and supports those who continue to serve. In Michigan alone, nearly 17,000 uniformed police officers work across more than 600 local, county, and state departments.
The resolution also commemorates the memory of 165 law enforcement officers nationwide who lost their lives in duty during 2024. Their names are inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.
Schmaltz highlighted the increasing challenges faced by law enforcement today and stressed public appreciation for their role.
"Our communities lean on police officers during the hardest moments — when chaos hits, when lives are at risk, and when order needs to be restored," Schmaltz stated. "They respond with professionalism and bravery when others need help the most. Police Week gives us the opportunity to recognize their daily sacrifices and show our respect in a meaningful way."
