City of Jackson issued the following announcement on Jan. 27.
Renovations for the MLK Center, a new medical marijuana business, and water rates. Here are some highlights from the Jackson City Council meeting on Jan. 28, 2020:
-A construction contract was awarded for a $1.9 million renovation of the Martin Luther King Community Center. Construction is set to begin in the spring and last through the summer.
-Because of the construction at the MLK Center, the Ward 1 Polling Place has been temporarily moved to Second Missionary Baptist Church for the May 2020 election.
-Construction contracts totaling $1.3 million were awarded for the Incubator and Festival kitchens. The City of Jackson and Consumers Energy have partnered to create a Kitchen Incubator in the former Vermeulen’s Furniture Store at 135 W. Cortland St. The intent of the project is to provide low cost, licensed, commercial kitchen space to persons desiring to create a food or natural resource business. The space will include a marketplace to sell goods, a seating area, and a “Festival Kitchen.” The Festival Kitchen will be awarded to a single recipient to use at their discretion.
-Conditional approval was granted by the council for one medical marijuana provisioning center in the City at 118 Columbus St. Further approval is required.
-An agreement between Consumers Energy and the City on a water rate for a power plant in Jackson was postponed for consideration by the council until Feb. 11.
-The council voted to receive an Engineering Division report that calls for reconstructing S. Martin Luther King Dr. from Morrell Street to Mason Street. This stretch of MLK Drive has not received major attention in 17 year and the roadway is in poor condition. If given further approval, construction could begin this summer.
