State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, R-Jackson, has voiced her concerns over the delay in passing crucial school safety legislation in Michigan. Schmaltz, who is leading bipartisan efforts to implement recommendations from the school safety task force, expressed her disappointment at the lack of progress in the state legislature.

"Why are people playing politics with our children’s safety?" Schmaltz questioned, highlighting the urgency of prioritizing school safety and mental health support for Michigan students in the aftermath of recent tragedies.

Despite introducing House Bills 4088-4100 over a year ago to address the need for safer schools and enhanced mental health resources, Schmaltz noted that the legislation has not received the attention it deserves. She emphasized the importance of taking proactive steps to safeguard schools, including establishing dedicated staff for school safety and mental health support, conducting regular safety plan reviews, and standardizing emergency response protocols.

Schmaltz expressed frustration at the lack of action from the House Education Committee, stating, "Every school shooting reignites calls for action. Let’s not wait for another one. We need to act now." She urged legislators to prioritize the safety and well-being of children and criticized the focus on less important issues at the expense of crucial school safety measures.

The state representative emphasized the bipartisan nature of House Bills 4088-4100, calling for unity in addressing the pressing concerns of students, parents, and educators. Schmaltz stressed the need to set aside partisan differences and work towards solutions that prioritize the needs of communities.

"It’s time to do the right thing and make school safety a top priority," Schmaltz concluded, underscoring the importance of protecting Michigan students and ensuring that schools remain prepared to respond to potential threats.

State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz represents Michigan’s 46th House District, encompassing parts of Jackson and Washtenaw counties.
