State Representative Sarah Lightner has been appointed as the chair of the House Judiciary Committee for the 2025-26 legislative term. Speaker Matt Hall announced her appointment, highlighting her extensive experience and commitment to public safety and judicial reform.

Lightner expressed gratitude for this new role. "Being entrusted with the responsibility of chairing the House Judiciary Committee is an incredible honor," she stated. "I want to thank Speaker Hall for his confidence in my leadership and vision. It’s time to refocus on policies that back our law enforcement, hold criminals accountable, and protect Michigan families."

The announcement was made during a press conference attended by law enforcement officials from across Michigan, including Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette, Calhoun County Sheriff Steven Hinkley, and Calhoun County Prosecutor Dave Gilbert.

Lightner emphasized the importance of the Judiciary Committee's work. "The Judiciary Committee plays a critical role in making sure our laws reflect the needs of the people we serve and the officers who put their lives on the line every day," she said. She also noted that prioritizing measures supporting law enforcement would be a focus during her tenure.

Before joining the Legislature, Lightner worked as a paralegal specializing in criminal defense and family law. Her career includes serving on the Criminal Justice Policy Commission under then-Governor Rick Snyder's appointment in 2015 and acting as judiciary and public safety chair for the Michigan Association of Counties while being a Jackson County Commissioner.

As a state representative, Lightner has led efforts in juvenile justice reform and addressed trial court funding challenges in Michigan. She looks forward to collaborating with stakeholders and members of the judicial branch to enhance public safety through smart criminal justice reforms.
