Last week, Senator Roger Victory introduced a legislative measure aimed at addressing the condition of local roads in Michigan. The proposed legislation, known as the Road Investment Incentive Program, seeks to collaborate with local communities to enhance road infrastructure.
“There has been lots of talk about fixing our roads over the last decade, and Lansing has continued to fail to get it done,” stated Victory, representing Hudsonville. He emphasized the importance of serious investment in local roads due to their impact on residents' daily lives.
Senate Bill 448 proposes an allocation of nearly $500 million in state funds. This funding is intended to match investments made by local road agencies dollar-for-dollar. The goal is to double the effect of local financial contributions without increasing state taxes.
The program's full implementation could see up to $10 billion invested into local roads over ten years. These roads have been identified as some of the lowest quality within Michigan.
“Many communities in West Michigan have already been investing in their local roads,” Victory noted. “I hope this bill will encourage that good behavior while also inviting more communities to step up and participate in improving Michigan’s local roads.”
The bill has been forwarded to the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for further consideration.
