On Monday, the House of Representatives passed the Promoting United States Wireless Leadership Act. The bipartisan bill was introduced by Representatives Tim Walberg (R-MI), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Tom Kean, Jr. (R-NJ), and Debbie Dingell (D-MI). It aims to strengthen American leadership by bringing together key leaders and stakeholders to create a unified approach in setting standards for 5G networks and future generations of wireless communications networks.
"The United States has been a longtime leader in cutting-edge technologies," said Rep. Walberg. "As a co-chair of the 5G and Beyond Caucus, I understand how critical it is that the U.S. remains the leading voice in the worldwide development of future wireless communications networks."
Rep. Clarke emphasized the importance of maintaining America’s position as a global leader in digital technology: “Providing standards-setting bodies with cooperation, support, and assistance from the NTIA is a key step to seeing that aspiration become a reality."
Rep. Kean highlighted that this bipartisan bill ensures American innovation sets future standards: “This bipartisan bill ensures that it is American innovation, rather than that of our adversaries abroad, which sets the standard for the future of wireless communications."
Rep. Dingell stressed proactive steps are necessary against global competitors like China: "We must take concrete, proactive steps to lower barriers to entry for U.S. companies and promote American competitiveness in this space."
Congressman Walberg serves as a co-chair of the Congressional 5G and Beyond Caucus.
