The veto of a plan to protect Michigan residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities from COVID-19 has drawn the ire of state legislators looking for action on the matter.
Rep. Bronna Kahle (R-Adrian), a former director of a senior center, called Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s policies "misguided" in a release issued on the Michigan House Republicans website.
“This wasn’t just a mistake,” Kahle said in the release. “It was a fatal error in judgement. Other states that implemented policies similar to Michigan’s quickly realized it was wrong and reversed course. But Michigan has not. More than 2,000 residents of elder care facilities have died from COVID-19 in our state, one of the worst in the nation.”
A plan she and her colleagues approved would have created a dedicated regional facility in each of the state’s eight regions to accept COVID-19 patients, Kahle continued. She intends to be a voice for those at-risk state residents until the governor abandons the present policy.
