City of Jackson issued the following announcement on Sept. 28.
High school students who would like to make a difference in their local government are invited to serve on the newly-created Jackson Youth Council. The City of Jackson is now taking applications for positions on the Youth Council.
The 10 member council is tasked with making recommendations to the City Council concerning the needs of children, families, and young adults in Jackson. Members will also work on innovative programs and initiatives that will improve the quality of life for young residents and families in the community.
The Youth Council is open to high school students who live in the City of Jackson. A completed application, 300 word essay, and teacher recommendation must be submitted to qualify for the review process. The City of Jackson Human Relations Commission will interview and appoint members to the council.
John Willis, the City’s Chief Equity Officer, will oversee the council. “We’re very excited to get this youth council going,” Willis said. “We have youth in our community who have a lot of drive and passion. We’d like to harness that energy to improve our City government and strengthen what we can do for children and families.”
An online application can be completed and submitted by going to cityofjackson.org/youthcouncil. The City would like all applications to be submitted by Nov. 13 for the first round of interviews.
