Accepting Applications for the position of Parks & Recreation Director

City of Adrian issued the following announcement on Aug 5.

The City of Adrian, MI (population: 21,000) is accepting applications for the position of Parks & Recreation Director.  Adrian (adriancity.com) is a city of arts, parks, and culture and is the home of three colleges – Adrian College, Siena Heights University, and Jackson College. Adrian has 17 beautifully maintained parks and the Kiwanis Trail, an 8-mile paved trail stretching from Adrian toward Tecumseh. With a historic downtown featuring shops, restaurants, and events, it is the Lenawee County seat and is located in close proximity to three major metropolitan areas – Toledo, Ann Arbor, and Detroit. 

Under the general direction of the City Administrator, the Director plans and oversees the development and maintenance of all city parks, cemetery, and forestry facilities, as well as recreational programs and services.  This includes planning, organizing, and directing day-to-day operations in a manner that promotes innovation and continuous improvement.   

Duties include establishment and administration of policies and procedures pertaining to departmental activities and staff. In coordination with Human Resources, the Director is responsible for hiring and evaluating staff, identifying departmental training needs, and addressing employee concerns in accordance with labor contract guidelines.  

Candidate will also be accountable for researching and anticipating the needs of the community related to physical parks and recreation programs and services, and developing long and short range goals to provide a complete program of services.  This includes preparation and administration of a formal five-year master plan for parks and recreation functions.

Other obligations include preparation and administration of departmental budget, writing and administering grants, responding to community concerns, and promotion of the department and collaboration within the community.
