With a little more than one month to go before the Tuesday, Nov. 8 General Election, the City of Jackson is reminding residents about the proper placement of campaign signs that support a political candidate or cause. According to the City’s sign ordinance, these types of signs are only allowed on private property and not in the right-of-way or “parkway”, which is the area between the street and sidewalk.
Previous election cycles in the City of Jackson have seen countless violations of this ordinance, with residents and campaigns placing signs in the right of way and at intersections. Not only do these questionable placements violate a City ordinance, they can also create safety hazards for vehicles and pedestrians by blocking views. According to the ordinance, a permit is required for residents to place temporary signs in the right-of-way.
Prior to the Aug. 2022 Primary Election, City staff increased enforcement of this ordinance by removing and confiscating signs illegally placed at intersections and on City property. Residents and businesses are often given a warning before a sign is removed as a courtesy, but City staff do have the authority to enforce the ordinance and remove signs without warning.
With the Nov. 2022 election quickly approaching, Public Information Officer Aaron Dimick says City staff are getting the word out about signs. “We’ve been increasing communications about campaign signs through our website and seasonal newsletter so our residents understand where they should be placed,” Dimick said. “Keeping signs on your side of the sidewalk will ensure you’re not violating the ordinance or creating a safety risk for others.”
