On May 17, 2023, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) grilled Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona about The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) consultation with American Federation of Teachers' (AFT) President Randi Weingarten, who provided edits to reopening guidance. With Weingarten's edits, schools serving 99 percent of children would have potentially remained closed. Click here to watch Walberg's remarks.

“The Department of Education should be the strongest proponent of making our schools work for students,” said Walberg. “Unfortunately, the Biden administration continues to demonstrate that the interests of teachers' unions are frequently elevated above the interest of our children. Prolonged school closures wreaked havoc across the country and learning recovery will take years if not decades. Attempts to rewrite history or ignore motivations behind closures do not help our children recover and put us at risk of making the same mistakes down the road.”
