State Representative Sarah Lightner, the ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee, expressed her views on the latest revenue estimates from the Consensus Revenue Estimating Conference. She emphasized that there is no need to impose higher taxes on the people of Michigan, as the state has sufficient revenue to fund essential services without the need for additional taxation.

Rep. Lightner stated, "The latest revenue estimates clearly show that there's absolutely no reason to impose higher taxes on the people of Michigan. Even without the governor's tax increase, there's enough revenue coming into the state to fund education and other essential services in the budget."

She further highlighted the financial challenges faced by families due to inflation, stating, "Any increases Michiganders have seen in their wages over the last couple of years are still being eaten up by inflation, and families continue to feel the pinch every time they step into the grocery store." Rep. Lightner emphasized that the role of the state government is not to spend all of people's money but to enable them to keep more of their hard-earned paychecks.

Rep. Lightner proposed a tax cut to alleviate the burden on families, saying, "With higher-than-expected revenue in Michigan, we can fund government services and sustain a tax cut. Even the governor has acknowledged the need to help families struggling with inflation. Let's support that sentiment, cut the income tax rate back to 4.05%, and let families keep more of their paychecks."

The representative's statement highlights the importance of fiscal responsibility and ensuring that government services are funded without burdening taxpayers. She argues that the surplus revenue can be used to provide necessary services and support a tax cut, allowing families to better cope with the rising cost of living.

Rep. Lightner's proposal aligns with the sentiment of helping families and acknowledges the strain caused by inflation. By reducing the income tax rate, more money can be retained by the taxpayers, ultimately assisting them in meeting their everyday expenses.

As Michigan looks to allocate its resources effectively, Rep. Lightner's stance on utilizing the higher-than-expected revenue to fund government services and sustain a tax cut provides an alternative approach to address the needs of the state and its residents.
