The Michigan House has given its approval to a bill introduced by Representative Dale Zorn aimed at improving educational support for children in military families. The legislation seeks to establish the Purple Star Program, which certifies schools that provide adequate resources and assistance to students who frequently change schools due to their parents' military service.
The Purple Star Program is already implemented in 37 other states, but Michigan has yet to adopt it. The program's certification indicates that a school is equipped to address the unique needs of military-connected students, offering necessary resources and information for enrollment and attendance.
Zorn's bill mandates the Michigan Department of Education to develop guidelines and standards for schools seeking certification under the Purple Star Program. According to Zorn, this initiative will create a standardized approach to support military-connected students in Michigan, promoting a welcoming environment for these students and their families.
"This crucial piece of legislation will create a structured support system targeting the unique challenges faced by children in military families as they move from school to school when their parent relocates for their job," said Zorn. "We must ensure they have the tools they need to thrive educationally and socially. Moving every two to three years wears heavily on kids. Ensuring they have a critical point of contact in these transitions is essential to ensuring they do not get lost in the shuffle."
House Bill 4027 received bipartisan support and will now proceed to the Senate for further deliberation.
