State Representative Nancy Jenkins-Arno, a Republican from Rollin Township, has voted in favor of a bipartisan initiative designed to enhance the safety of Michigan schools. The package aims to bolster school security measures, improve mental health resources, and ensure that school staff are adequately prepared for emergencies.

"Every student deserves to feel safe and supported at school," Jenkins-Arno stated. "This plan recognizes that safety goes beyond locked doors, and it means building an environment where students are heard and cared for."

The proposal includes several key elements: schools must regularly update their emergency operation plans and revise fire and security drill protocols; safety training will be provided for school personnel by the Michigan State Police and the Office of School Safety; quarterly reports containing school safety tips and best practices will be published by the Office of School Safety; schools will receive timely safety tips and alerts from the Michigan State Police; and student ID cards will feature the OK2SAY confidential tip line.

"The package takes a thoughtful approach to school safety," Jenkins-Arno commented. "We’re not only working to prevent tragedies but also create school environments that students can thrive in academically, emotionally, and socially."
