State Representative Nancy Jenkins-Arno, a Republican from Rollin Township, cast her vote today in favor of legislation aimed at ensuring fairness in women's athletics. The proposed bills seek to prevent biological males from participating in girls' sports.
"Girls deserve to compete on a fair playing field," stated Jenkins-Arno. "They’ve fought hard for equal opportunities in athletics, and allowing biological males to participate in girls’ sports creates a fundamental unfairness. This is about standing up for our daughters, sisters, and young women across Michigan who train to compete with integrity."
The legislative package includes House Bill 4066, which mandates that public school boards categorize athletic teams based on biological sex. This bill explicitly bars male students from joining female-designated sports teams. In addition, House Bill 4469 proposes an amendment to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. It would allow K-12 educational institutions to determine athletic eligibility according to the sex listed on an individual's original birth certificate issued at or near birth.
"Our girls deserve every opportunity to succeed in an environment that is both fair and safe," added Jenkins-Arno. "Boys have their own athletic divisions for a reason. There’s no justification for them to compete in girls’ sports, where it undermines the integrity of the game and the opportunities meant for young women."
These bills will now proceed to the Senate for further deliberation.
