State Representative Kathy Schmaltz and Jackson County Parks Director Kyle Lewis appeared before a legislative committee to advocate for a state grant aimed at restoring Cascade Falls in Jackson. Schmaltz emphasized the importance of Cascade Falls, describing it as an integral part of the county's identity and economy since its construction in 1932.
"Local families, businesses, and donors have stepped up to support its restoration, and now we’re asking the state to invest $1.5 million to help us move the project forward," Schmaltz stated. She highlighted how visitors contribute to local businesses, making this an investment that benefits future generations.
The proposed $1.5 million grant is part of the state budget process. If approved, it would enable a $3.5 million project that includes restoring concrete structures and relocating pumps from underground to an above-ground pump house.
Lewis explained the necessity of these repairs due to extensive wear over 92 Michigan winters: "We’ve had patchwork repairs over the years, but we’re kind of beyond the patchwork phase now." He noted issues such as water leakage and deteriorating stairs, railings, and pool floors.
The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity will decide which projects receive funding as budget discussions continue.
