The College and Career Access Center (CCAC) of Jackson has received a $6,000 Summer Melt Grant from the Michigan College Access Network. The funding is intended to help local students successfully transition from high school to college by addressing “summer melt,” which refers to the phenomenon where students who have been accepted into college do not enroll in the fall.

With this grant, the CCAC will create and expand programs designed to keep students engaged during the summer months after graduation. These efforts aim to increase college enrollment rates among Jackson County graduates by providing targeted outreach and support.

“Too many students get all the way to the finish line — applying to and being accepted into college — only to lose momentum during the summer months,” said Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, R-Jackson. “This grant will make a real difference in helping local students stay on course and pursue the futures they’ve worked so hard to earn.”

The grant comes from both state funds and philanthropic partners associated with the Michigan College Access Network. It will allow for new initiatives at CCAC, including program development, staffing, and evaluation of outreach efforts.

“Our community is incredibly fortunate to have a resource like the College and Career Access Center,” Schmaltz said. “They’re on the ground every day supporting students, empowering families, and helping build a stronger future for Jackson. I’m thrilled to see their work recognized and supported with this grant.”
