State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz has supported a measure aimed at increasing accountability among Michigan lawmakers regarding the state budget process. On August 21, Schmaltz voted in favor of House Joint Resolution M, which proposes an amendment to the Michigan Constitution that would suspend pay for legislators and the governor if they do not pass a balanced annual budget by the July 1 deadline. The suspension would last until the budget is signed into law.

Schmaltz explained her position, stating: “Families need certainty. Parents want to know how their children’s schools will be funded. Seniors rely on health programs. Communities count on public safety resources. When the budget isn’t finished on time, it’s everyday people who are left in limbo,” said Schmaltz, R-Jackson. “If legislators can’t meet the deadline, we shouldn’t expect to collect a paycheck. Our focus should be on finishing the job for the people who sent us here.”

For House Joint Resolution M to take effect, it requires approval by two-thirds of both chambers of the Michigan Legislature before being presented to voters in a statewide election.

The resolution received a 70-30 vote in the House but did not reach the necessary threshold for passage. All House Republicans supported it, while several Democrats opposed.

Schmaltz expressed disappointment with the outcome but indicated hope for future consideration: She said she was surprised to see the measure fail, but she hopes it will receive another vote in the future.
